The NYPB Game-Day Hot Dog Guide
Share
A great game-day spread should be easy to serve and easy to customize. Hot dogs and smoked kielbasa cook quickly, hold well for a short period, and give every guest the freedom to build a favorite.
Grilling hot dogs
- Preheat the grill to medium heat and clean the grates.
- Cook the hot dogs over direct heat, turning regularly, until evenly browned and heated through.
- Toast the buns briefly over indirect heat so they stay soft inside.
Cooking smoked kielbasa
Cut kielbasa into links or grill it whole over medium heat, turning as the casing browns. Because products vary, follow the package instructions and heat fully before serving.
Build a topping bar
- Mustard, ketchup, and relish
- Sauerkraut or caramelized onions
- Chopped onions and pickled peppers
- Chili and shredded cheese
- Slaw, bacon, or barbecue sauce
Plan for the crowd
Set out smaller batches and replenish them rather than leaving everything at room temperature. Keep hot food hot and cold toppings chilled. Use separate utensils for cooked and uncooked foods.
